How to Insulate Concrete Floors: Keep Warm & Save Energy

INSTALL GUIDES: Concrete Floor

Concrete floors are a popular choice for both residential and commercial buildings due to their durability, versatility, and cost-effectiveness. When combined with radiant heating systems, concrete floors can provide comfortable, even heating. Insulating concrete floors, especially when incorporating radiant heating systems, is essential for optimizing energy efficiency, comfort, and cost-effectiveness. Proper insulation prevents heat loss, ensuring that the heat generated by the radiant system is directed upwards into the living space.

Use: SmartSHIELD 10M, 48 Inch, Fast Action, Perforated, 72 Inch, 24 Inch, 16 Inch or Reflective Bubble Reflective

  1. Prevents basement moisture
  2. Keeps its efficiency even if it has been soaked in water
  3. Keeps your floor warmer

How To Insulate Concrete Floor

  1. Install 1" x 4" spacers.
  2. Roll SmartSHIELD over spacers.
  3. Tape seams with reflective tape or use SmartSHIELD Fast Action to avoid having to tape seams.
  4. Apply layer of 1" x 4" spacers over SmartSHIELD
  5. Install your flooring

Importance of Insulating Concrete Floors :-

  1. Energy Efficiency: Reduces heat loss, improving the efficiency of the heating system.
  2. Comfort: Ensures even heat distribution, maintaining a comfortable temperature.
  3. Cost Savings: Lowers energy consumption and reduces heating costs.
  4. System Longevity: Reduces wear on the heating system by preventing overwork.

Installation Methods :-

  1. Under-Slab Insulation:

    • Placement: Installed before the concrete is poured.
    • Insulation Types: Rigid foam boards or spray foam.
    • Installation: Laid over a vapor barrier on a compacted gravel or crushed stone base.
  2. Above-Slab Insulation:

    • Placement: Installed over an existing concrete slab.
    • Insulation Types: Rigid foam boards or reflective foil insulation.
    • Installation: Laid directly on the concrete slab before installing a subfloor or flooring.

Proper insulation of concrete floors is essential for maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of radiant heating systems. Using the right type of insulation and following meticulous installation procedures ensures that the heat is directed upwards into the living space, providing comfortable and cost-effective heating. By incorporating rigid foam boards, spray foam, or reflective foil insulation, you can create a well-insulated concrete floor that enhances the performance of your radiant heating system.
