How To Insulate With A Radon Barrier

Floor:

  1. Do the same installation as underneath the concrete slab (see  Radiant Heat in a Concrete Floor). Just make sure to seal it along the wall.

Exterior Wall:

  1. Install SmartSHIELDUnder Concrete or Reflective-Bubble-White Poly, white side against the wall, with a multi purpose adhesive. Seal the seams with under concrete tape. Be sure to properly seal with caulking at the bottom and at ground level on the foundation wall.

Installation Process :-

Materials Needed :

  • Utility knife or insulation cutter
  • Measuring tape
  • Roller or squeegee (for smoothing out the barrier)

Step-by-Step Guide :

  1. Preparation:

    • Inspect the Area: Ensure the subfloor or foundation is clean, dry, and free of debris. Repair any cracks or damage.
    • Measure: Measure the area to determine the amount of radon barrier and insulation material needed.
  2. Installing the Radon Barrier:

    • Lay the Barrier:

      • Unroll the polyethylene sheeting or place the radon barrier layer over the entire area. Ensure it covers all potential entry points for radon gas.
      • Overlap seams by at least 12 inches to ensure complete coverage and minimize gaps.
    • Seal Seams:

      • Use tape specifically designed for radon barriers to seal all seams and overlaps. Ensure the tape adheres well to the barrier material.
      • Apply pressure with a roller or squeegee to ensure a tight seal.
    • Seal Penetrations:

      • Seal around any pipes, vents, or other penetrations with appropriate sealing compounds. Ensure a tight and durable seal to prevent radon entry.
  3. Installing the Insulation:

    • Rigid Foam Insulation:

      • Cut foam boards to fit snugly between floor joists or on the foundation walls.
      • Secure with adhesive or fasteners. Tape seams to ensure an air-tight barrier.
    • Spray Foam Insulation:

      • Apply the foam directly to the radon barrier surface, covering the area evenly. Ensure a consistent thickness to achieve the desired R-value.
    • Fiberglass or Other Insulation:

      • If using fiberglass or other types of insulation, place it over the radon barrier or between the framing, ensuring it fits snugly and covers all areas.
  4. Vapor Barrier (if needed):

    • Install Vapor Barrier: If required, install a vapor barrier on the warm side of the insulation to prevent moisture from entering the insulation and condensing.
  5. Interior Finishing (if applicable):

    • Drywall Installation: Install drywall or other finishing materials over the insulated area.
    • Seal Gaps: Ensure all seams and gaps are sealed to maintain an air-tight envelope.
